Travelling from west coast to east tonight and my roadwork free motorway joy fest of a drive came to an end with a road closure over Soutra. Stopped at the top of the winding diversion over the Lammermuirs to breathe in and put my grumpiness in check with these colours. 🔥

Just delivered this painting bought from my recent exhibition ‘As Far As I Can See’ to a lovely collector and then I caught this stunning view from her front door as I was leaving. And breathe. It’s been a stressful week for tonnes of reasons and the happiness this painting brought and all the light and these colours made me feel a wee bit better.

My solo exhibition ‘As Far As I Can See’ came to an end yesterday. Thanks so much to everyone who visited, wrote such wonderful words in the visitor book and shared the exhibition online. Special thanks too to those who bought my work (your paintings will be arriving soon) and also to the lovely team @liveborders Hawick Museum. I really loved putting the exhibition together and it was super special to share the billing with Willliam Gillies | Modernism and Nation touring from @royal_scottish_academy

Apart from anything it was incredibly useful to see the collection of work in one place and to see relationships between individual works. I’m looking forward to seeing how it informs forthcoming projects.

Scaling up. Happy being in the studio today after a bit of a break. As a student in 1997 I was part of a group show called Sunday Painters at @edinburghuniversity which was a bit tongue and cheek and was supposed to poke fun at how art and painting in particular was viewed and I remember it really annoyed some fellow students and tutors who thought it was disrespectful and caused no end of controversy. I was cross about it as there was a lot of slightly high and mighty arguments from those that thought they were better and right and refused to see or acknowledge other experiences or points of view. It went ahead with a depleted number of exhibitors and it was good and now everything comes full circle and I am quite firmly in the Sunday painting mode now 🤣

I’m currently working on a cultural project in B

I’m currently working on a cultural project in Berwick upon Tweed and even though I’ve lived nearby for two decades now and know the place so well I’m currently obsessed with daily walks over the main bridge gazing upon the old bridge which is being restored. I like crossing the river and it’s taking me ages every day as I keep spying new things. I’ve just finished some work for Connecting Threads and the Bridge 400 celebrations making fish prints inspired by Japanese printmaking centuries ago and I’m reminded too of a community engagement project I led two years ago further up the Tweed inspired by the restoration of the Union Chain Bridge.

Something about bridges and rivers keeps happening to me, keeps recurring. Something too about the shimmer of this water and its ebb and flow with the tide. Coincidentally I spotted a tote bag I designed for Berwick Community Trust last week out in the wild. I made this about 14 years ago and I was delighted to spot one. I thought I might be the last remaining person who still had one kicking about. The person who owned it was a bit surprised at my excitement! And on the bag is the bridge and I remember painstakingly drawing those arches as a feature of the design leading to the clock tower.

Anyway - my point is…..there’s something about Berwick at the moment….and bridges and rivers. And I quite like the serendipity of it all.

Two weekends left to see my exhibition at Hawick Musuem ‘As Far As I Can See’ - thanks for all the love so far. I was in a meeting yesterday and someone asked if I was the same person that had painted the landscapes in Hawick Museum because she loved them and I love little instances like that. Just as much as I love Tom Petty. It wasn’t very cool to listen to Tom when I was 16 but I really loved this album in my headphones as I cycled about the countryside. I think about being a teenager without streaming services and Spotify and Apple music a lot at the moment. I would have LOVED to have had the tech!

Anyway - if looking at oil paintings of the Scottish Borders landscape is your thing….get yersel to Hawick. Exhibition closes 25 Aug.

Andy and me have been married for 25 years today which is a bit surreal and we’ve had an amazing out of this world meal in Soller in Mallorca in a restaurant we had a nosey into yesterday and now we’ve had shots with the chef which was excellent fun. Extremely hot today which mirrors the day we got married in Tynet church between Fochabers and Buckie when it topped 30 degrees in 1999.
